Land Acknowledgement
The Longyear Museum of Anthropology at Colgate University recognizes our collective responsibility to acknowledge our colonial history. Our campus sits on the traditional lands of the Onyota’a:ká: known as the People of the Upright Stone and Oneida Indian Nation of New York. The museum is actively committed to building relationships with the Oneida people and with other Native American tribes and nations. It is urgent that we consider the legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together today.
About LMA
John Munro Longyear III, an archaeologist and professor of anthropology at Colgate University, began building collections in 1950. In 1956, Longyear called for the creation of a small teaching museum on campus. Under his direction, an anthropology museum opened in Alumni Hall in 1961. It was in 1965 that the museum moved to its current space within renovated Alumni Hall. The museum was later named in honor of Professor Longyear upon his retirement from Colgate in 1978.
The Longyear Museum of Anthropology is a teaching collection of archaeological and ethnological cultural heritage materials representing communities around the world. We are a resource for students, faculty, staff, indigenous communities, and the public.
The LMA is located on the Colgate University campus, off Alumni Road, on the second floor of Alumni Hall.
